  • That concrete is HARD That's about 20 minutes of work.
  • Starting the excavation for the lifts The crew is starting to dig the holes where the lifting will happen. That electric spade really goes through the clay soil!
  • Digging! I can't believe how fast they can dig down through the soil.

  • The slow way A short handled shovel comes in hand when you have to do close work.
  • Ready to set a pier The foundation has been revealed and is ready for a helical pier to be partially set prior to an inspection.

  • Front porch removed Damn gophers really know how to dig.
  • The hydraulic engine This is the hydraulic motor that will be used to drive in the hielical piers. They can monitor the pressure to know the torque being applied.
  • Waiting for action
  • A pier partially set If you look closelyl on the near side of the hole you can see our gas line. PG&E had to come to make sure they hadn't damaged a line.
  • Awaiting inspection The engineer has to come and inspect each of the piers before they are sunk to their final depth which is determined by the amount of torque required to turn the shaft indicating the degree of soil compaction.
  • Another view The shaft is about six feet long. They can put extensions on the shaft and go down about 50 feet or so.
  • Maneuvering into place It's tight work along the house.
  • Thursday's work These plus the two on the north side of my studio remain.
  • Driving in a pier It's twitchy work involving subtle positioning of the motor, the arm and the machine. The landscaping makes it more challenging.
  • Protecting the landscape They use sheets of plywood, screwed together, as a base for the machine which finds getting traction on same a bit difficult.
  • Removing the back deck The Sedillo folks had to remove a segment of the back deck to reveal the foundation.
  • Hand work A gas line made some of the task rather tricky.
